The Washington Valor have announced that they have fired head coach Dean Cokinos following an 0-4 start to the 2018 season. Defensive line coach Benji McDowell has been named an interim head coach by the team.
“We felt that a change in leadership was necessary to put the Valor in the best possible position to win games,” Roger Mody, Managing Partner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Arena Football League teams, said in a statement. “Building a team from the ground up is no small feat and we are grateful to Dean for everything he has done for this organization over the last two years and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
McDowell led the Tampa Bay Storm to one of the best defenses in the league as the team’s defensive coordinator. He also was a member of the Alabama Hammers of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL), who won the title in 2013.
His first shot at head coach will be on Saturday when the Valor host the Brigade at the Capital One Arena. Kickoff for that game is set for 3 p.m. ET.
