The National Arena League has announced the Carolina Cobras as their newest expansion team. The team will play out of Greensboro, NC. Home games will be played at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
“We are extremely proud to be bringing a franchise to North Carolina. Greensboro has been prime target for NAL expansion with their connection with its neighboring cities Winston Salem and High Point,“ NAL Expansion Chairman Jeff Bouchy said at today’s press conference. “We believe Greensboro’s community is well deserving of a arena football franchise and it’s region will be a strong foundation for a rapid growing fan base with an electric atmosphere to bring to the impressive Greensboro Coliseum. The growth that we are having this year is a testament to our league’s strength and will be a reflection of our success to come in the future years.”
The team will be named the Carolina Cobras. They are the sixth current team in the NAL. The other five teams are the Jacksonville Sharks, Columbus Lions, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and two other expansion franchises in the Jersey (Trenton, NJ) Flight and Massachusetts (Worcester, MA) Pirates.
The league will announce their seventh team when they officially welcome a franchise based in Portland, ME. No name has officially been chosen, but they are expected to be named the Maine Mammoths.
The National Arena League will play their second ever season beginning in April 2018, according to the league’s press release. They played their first season from March-July 2017. The Jacksonville Sharks defeated the Columbus Lions in the inaugural tile game on July 10.
