The American Arena League, the newest arena football league that is expected to begin play in 2018, has announced their first 10 teams. Those teams compose of the following:
Glenn Falls Gladiators Vermont Bucks
Central Penn Chargers
Hampton Roads Riptide
Many teams on this list come from the Arena Pro Football League or Can-Am League. Both leagues lasted just one season. The Roughriders defeated the Tarpons in the Arena Pro Football League. Vermont defeated Rochester for the only Can-Am title. Now, all four teams will compete against one another next year.
Despite the rumor that Richmond would be joining the National Arena League, that is not the case. They will be joining the American Arena League, joining the Arena Pro Football in the new league.
They could have a new rivalry with the Hampton Roads Riptide, a team that plays just two hours from Richmond near Virginia Beach.
Another possible rivalry could be the Rochester Kings and the Buffalo Blitz. The two new in-state rivals will play just an hour and 19 minutes apart.
Fans got a first look at what to expect from the AAL when the Vermont Bucks faced the Central Penn Chargers back on June 3. Vermont won 46-6. While that may not be what to expect from the AAL as a whole, it does say something about what to expect from the Bucks.
It is unknown as of right now whether or not the league will add more than the 10 teams they have right now. If they don’t, that’s still more teams then the Arena Football League (5), National Arena League (6) and as much as the Indoor Football League (10).
The American Arena League will kick off its first season of play in 2018. There has been no set date as of when exactly the season will kick off.
