The Philadelphia Soul hosted the Tampa Bay Storm at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Saturday night. This highly-anticipated matchup was thought to be an ArenaBowl XXX preview. The Soul were looking to stay undefeated while the Storm were looking to stay hot.
Philadelphia got on board first with a touchdown pass from Dan Raudabaugh to Darius Reynolds. A touchdown pass from Randy Hippeard to Joe Hills tied the game at seven. The touchdown for Hills was the 77th consecutive game in which he has a touchdown catch.
Reynold’s second touchdown of the night gave Philadelphia the lead back. After a Beau Bell interception, a Mykel Benson touchdown gave the Soul a 21-7 lead. That would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
Reynolds’ third touchdown of the night gave Philadelphia a 28-7 lead. They had begun to take control. Following a Hills touchdown and a Soul turnover on downs, Hills’ third of the half made it a 28-21 game at halftime.
After Tampa turned the ball over on downs, Benson scored his 100th career touchdown to give the Soul a 34-21 lead. Following another turnover on downs from Tampa, Benson scored again to give Philadelphia a 48-28 lead. They would take that 20-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Tampa Bay would continue to try and keep it close, but the Soul were too much for them when it was all said and done. Philadelphia beat the Storm for second time this season, this time by a final score of 62-41. The Storm will have a bye week next weekend. The Soul will travel to face the Cleveland Gladiators next Saturday night.
Also, with a win, the Soul have clinched a home playoff game. That game is scheduled to be played on Friday, Aug. 11. With a win, the Soul would advance to their second consecutive ArenaBowl. ArenaBowl XXX is scheduled to be played Saturday, Aug. 26, one year after Philadelphia won ArenaBowl XXIX.
