On April 10, 2005, the Los Angeles Avengers were playing the New York Dragons. The Avengers kicked off to the Dragons after a score. Al Lucas made a tackle on the return man Corey Johnson and the play was over.
There was just one problem. Lucas was not moving. He lay on the field, motionless. The Avengers trainer tried to revive him on the field, but was unable to.
After half hour of trying to get him back up, Lucas was transported from the Staples Center to the California Hospital Medical Center. At 1:28 p.m. PT, Al Lucas was pronounced dead.
The cause of death was classified as blunt force trauma to the head and a spinal injury. The incident occurred when Johnson’s knee hit Lucas’ helmet.
After all these years, Lucas’ legacy lives on in the Arena Football League, even if the Los Angeles Avengers haven’t.
