The inaugural Chinese Arena Football League season kicks off tomorrow in Shanghai with what is being known as Super Series I. There will be five Super Series during the season, leading up to championship weekend the weekend of Nov. 5. Here are the games being played in Super Series I.
Beijing Lions vs Shanghai Skywalkers: this is looking like the title game preview before the season even begins. Both Beijing and Shanghai have great teams based on the American players both teams drafted in the CAFL Draft back on June 10. The Lions have players such as Cleveland Gladiators wide receiver Collin Taylor and Philadelphia Soul defensive lineman Teddy Jennings.
Shanghai has a good quarterback in Shane Austin and a great wide receiver in Shaun Kauleinamoku. The Skywalkers also have Soul defensive back Dwayne Hollis. He was second in the AFL in 2016 with eight interceptions. This will be a great game to watch between two powerhouse teams.
Qingdao Clipper vs Guangzhou Power: this is the first ever CAFL game to be played. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET China time (2 a.m. ET). Both teams are stacked with Chinese players. Fans will get a first glance at what these players can do. Qingdao has an advantage, however. They have Soul linebacker Jake Metz, who led the AFL with seven sacks.
Dalian Dragon Kings vs Shenzen Naja: another team stacked with Chinese players, the Naja’s impact American player seems to be Tristan Purifoy, who played with the Tampa Bay Storm and Arizona Rattlers in 2016. Dalian had a big-name player in Jacksonville Sharks wide receiver Joe Hills, but he didn’t make the trip to China.
