Arena Football League Cleveland Gladiators

Gladiators Coach Steve Thonn Not to Return in 2017

Yesterday it was announced that Cleveland Gladiators head coach  Steve Thonn will not be returning to the team in 2017. Thonn guided Cleveland to their best regular season in franchise history in 2014, going 17-1, winning two more games in the playoffs and earning Coach of The Year honors.

The season would end with a very painful loss in Arena Bowl XXVII (played in Cleveland) to the Arizona Rattlers who Cleveland has never beaten. Thonn’s Gladiators coaching career comes to an end with a final record of 64-65.

At this moment, it is unclear if this was a mutual agreement to part ways, or something else. It should be noted that Coach Thonn did have difficulty catching his breath on two occasions, even having to leave the arena right before kickoff early in the season.

Coach Thonn currently sits at eighth all-time in total games won at 90, three behind Jay Gruden, who is now the current head coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.
