The Philadelphia Soul came into 2016 with a chip on their shoulder. They had lost in the American Conference Championship Game to the Jacksonville Sharks in 2015. They were looking to get to the ArenaBowl this time around after falling one game short last season.
After dominating the Cleveland Gladiators to open the season, the Sharks once again came to Philadelphia and knocked off the Soul. After that loss, the Soul racked off six consecutive wins. Two of those wins came against the dominant Arizona Rattlers and the then undefeated Orlando Predators.
They would lose two of their next four games, but after four consecutive wins to end the season, including a Week 18 win over the Predators, the Soul won the American Conference regular season title.
After blowing the Tampa Bay Storm away in the first round of the playoffs, the Soul had a rematch with the Sharks in the American Conference Championship Game. The Soul would score a touchdown with four seconds left, giving them a 55-50 win and helping them advance to ArenaBowl XXIX.
They came in as underdogs against the Rattlers, but proved they were the better team. They scored on offense, defense and special teams and jumped out to a 21-0 lead. They never looked back as the defense clinched the win in ArenaBowl XXIX for the Soul.
